How much internaional traveling does a merchant marine do?

I’m planning to be a merchant marine in the near future with the hope of being able to travel. I would like to know if people who are unlicensed mariners do alot of traveling overseas or is it limited mostly to the states. Would i get to travel in the same sense as when one is in the navy or would i be mostly in one location? Also how much of a say would i have in determining where i get to work?
